Before Setting Up Your Ledger nano S Wallet
Now, before setting up your Ledger wallet go through this list of security checks.
First, ensure you purchased your Ledger Nano S directly from the official ledger.com website. Keep in mind, buying hardware wallets from third-party sources can put you at risk.
This is because third-party sources can install backdoors on hardware wallets. Thus, giving the seller access to your stored cryptocurrency — it’s happened before.
Second, make sure that your computer has an antivirus and that it’s up to date with the latest virus definitions.
If for any reason you feel your system has been compromised, ensure it’s been resolved before continuing. Try running full system scans using multiple different malware scanning tools.
Setup Your Ledger Nano S Wallet
To get started, visit start.ledgerwallet.com and click the “Download Now” button. You will then open the file once the download completes.

This will launch the Ledger Live Setup. Follow through the installer until you see the “Ledger Live has been installed on your computer.” message.
Keep the “Run Ledger Live” input checked and click the “Finish” button to complete setup.
You will now be prompted to setup a new device. Once the program loads, click the “Get Started” button. Following, click the “Initialize a new Ledger device” option.
After selecting the “Initialize a new Ledger device” option, you will be taken to the device setup page.

Pin Code
- Connect the Ledger Nano S to your computer.
- Press both buttons simultaneously as instructed on your device’s screen.
- Press the right button to “Configure as a new device”.
- Choose your pin code by using the left and right buttons to cycle through. Simultaneously push both buttons to select each desired digit.
- End your 4-8 digit pin with the √ check sign.
Recovery Phrase
This is important — Your Ledger Nano will quiz you after so be sure to write your phrase down. If you ever lose your Ledger Nano S, you will need this recovery phrase.
- Using the “My Recovery Phrase” sheet included in the box, write down the words given to you on your Ledger Nano S.
- Write down each word and press the right button on your Ledger Nano S to finish.
- After your 24th word, simultaneously hit both buttons on your Ledger Nano S to complete.
- Simultaneously hit both buttons to begin your phrase confirmation step.
After confirming your phrases, go back to the Ledger Nano Live setup and click the “Continue” button.
Security Checklist

Answer each security checklist question honestly. Keep in mind these questions are to protect you from being a victim of cryptocurrency theft.
Once you complete the questions, click the “Check Now” button. Follow up by pressing both buttons on your Ledger Nano S to confirm the connection.
Your computer will begin installing the Ledger Nano S device software.
Once the software is installed, your Ledger Nano S will ask you to “Allow Ledger manager” — hit the right button of your Ledger Nano S to confirm.
Finally, go back to the Ledger Live Setup screen and click the “Continue” button.
Password Lock

On the next screen, you’ll be given a form to enter a password. Enter a password to protect from unauthorized access to Ledger Live data stored on your computer.
Complete this step by clicking the “Continue” button.

If you’d like, go through each option and check/ uncheck each to your liking. Finalize your installation by clicking the “Continue” button once more.

Ledger Nano S Recovery
Now that you have your Ledger Nano S device set up and running, it’s a good idea to test out recovery in case it’s ever lost or stolen.
- Begin by restarting your Ledger Nano S.
- Now, intentionally enter your passcode wrong three times.
- Then, you’ll be asked if you want to “Configure as new device?”.
- Now, select the “×” option.
- Next, select “√” to restore the configuration.
- After, you’ll be asked to enter your seed words. If you’re able to recover your account with those, it’s safe to continue.
In addition, if you have lost your Ledger Nano S, use the steps below to restore your configuration onto your new Ledger Nano S.
- Begin by starting your Ledger Nano S.
- Then, you’ll be asked if you want to “Configure as new device?”.
- Now, select the “×” option.
- Next, select “√” to restore the configuration.
- Choose your PIN code.
- After, you’ll be asked to enter your seed words.

Installing the XRP App
Open the Ledger Live program on your computer if it’s not already open.


In the Ledger Live program, click the “Manager” button in the left sidebar.
You’ll be presented with a App Catalog area, in which you can search for “XRP”.
When you see XRP in the search results of the App Catalog, click the “Install” button beside it.
Once the XRP app is processed and installed, you will gain access to the XRP option on your Ledger nano S.

Open up your Ledger Live program if it’s not open.
Adding an XRP Account to Ledger Live
Once loaded, click the “Portfolio” link in the left sidebar.
In the Portfolio menu, click the “Add accounts” button on the bottom of the screen.

This will open a popup window to select your crypto asset.

In this window, type “XRP” and select it from the dropdown list. After, you will be presented with the following steps.

After following these steps, you will be presented with a form to name the account. Simply give it any name and click the “Add account” button.

You’ll then be given a confirmation that your XRP account has been added. Click the “Close” button to continue.
Sending XRP to Your Nano Ledger S
Now, in the Ledger Live program you’ll see your XRP account under “Accounts” in the left sidebar — Select that account.
Follow the steps given to you in the ”Receive” popup menu and click the “Continue” button.
Verify your Ledger Nano S address matches the receive address on your computer by clicking the ”Verify” button. Finally, verify the XRP address on your Ledger Nano S.
You will be using this address to send your XRP to — copy it to your clipboard or send to it by scanning the QR code.
WARNING: Before sending your full amount of XRP, ensure everything is working properly by following these steps.
- Send 40 XRP from your wallet/exchange to your Ledger Nano S.
- If it gets delivered, try sending 20 XRP back to the exchange/wallet.
- If that gets delivered, you are safe to send your full amount of XRP to the Ledger Nano S.
